Any experience with Zoneminder Software for cameras?

We need to install some security cameras and most of the cameras out there
come equipped with a Windows application.
The only Open Source application we have been able to identify that works
with different cameras is Zoneminder.

Anybody have positive or negative experiences with Zoneminder?

Any other open source alternatives for managing cameras out there?
