I second Dave's suggestion. Setting up a VPN is probably the best way 
to go. I think you'll have to set up a machine as a VPN gateway, as a 
replacement or in addition to the router.

I found OpenVPN easy to set up and maintain for both Linux and 
Windows machines. You'll get the security of encryption as a bonus.
