I don't know about Google but I know that Yahoo has a private and 
apparently heavily-modified build of BSD and MySQL. If you have the 
resources of a Yahoo or Google to maintain your own MySQL distribution, 
maybe it's a choice, and even then one has to wonder why they would 
bother. It's not like MySQL has *any* advantage to offer over 
PostgreSQL. It's a mistake to assume that these big organizations are 
any better at making these choices than smaller ones or that they're 
made any differently. They might have backed into using MySQL due to the 
ignorance, limitations, or biases of whoever decided to use MySQL 
originally and are now stuck with that choice. Many IT decisions are 
made out of fashion, FUD, and happenstance, not necessarily because 
there was an entirely rational process in making them.
