As to what *not* to buy, I'd list the Lexmark C530 and advise you to be
suspicious of Lexmark printers in general. We have the C530 and a new
cartridge is about $130. The darn thing takes four of them, and they don't
seem to last very long.
I recently bought a Brother HL-2170 black and white printer for less than
the cost of a cartridge for the Lexmark. It took a bit of fiddling to get
it running under linux, but it now works properly. (It installed very
easily under Windows XP, and required no install to be recognized by Mac
OS-X).

Yes, I know I'm top-posting.
