SATA drive and PATA-only motherboard

Well there are cheap Sil3112A cards.  Not a great SATA controller but it
seems to work (except with some seagate drives).

For PCIe users, JMB363 seems like a nice AHCI controller that works with
everything.

Some of the promise cards work well with linux, but they cost more.
