How do PPTP packets arriving at your work's public firewall know to send
them to your work XP box?
Are you port forwarding port 1723 TCP/UDP?
I am not sure if PPTP is any more secure than RDP.

On work's public firewall, how about just portforwarding RDP 3389 to
your XP box at work.
That will work, but RDP is not secured.
