You have to configure which mode you want.  As for encryption, I
regularly use WPA2 with mine.  The 5 modes are gateway, where the AP
connects wireless devices to the internet, and also includes a "hot
spot" mode, where you can share a hot spot connection.  It's also a
repeater, can connect ethernet devices to WiFi and it will even act as a
plain access point.
