It's official.

As of today, GTALUG is officially recognized as an At-Large Structure
(ALS) of ICANN, the international body with the mandate to oversee
Internet domain names and IP number allocations.

I wish to congratulate GTALUG for taking the action to participate, and
specifically to Myles and Gordon for putting forward an exemplary
application. Thanks to them, it's been relatively quick progress from my
ICANN presentation at the April TLUG meeting to today's formal welcoming.

With a planned massive expansion of "generic" top-level domains (to
compete with .com, .net, .biz, etc) and the ever-encroaching influence
of vested interests (including an aggressive trademark lobby and the
various sellers and resellers of domain names), having an active and
vigilant At-Large body is a must, and I welcome GTALUG's involvement.

More information on ICANN's At-Large community is available at
http://www.atlarge.icann.org/ and specifically on the North American
region (which in ICANN's regional division includes the ALSs from just
Canada and the US):
