I thought the speed varied by mysql backend, as did the features (in
fact many features mean using a backend that isn't fast).
Besides postgres has gotten faster too. It also has only one backend
causing a whole lot less confusion.
I personally much prefer the command line tool for postgres over whatever
mysql has (never did find a decent command line tool for mysql).
