I choose to cheer such efforts rather than to sneer at it. The more
successful Microsoft is at fighting piracy, the more people be forced
to evaluate their products on value, and the better open source looks
by comparison.

That doesn't mean that everyone will switch, but it certainly makes
for a fairer comparison.

In many cases in the past, MS has turned a blind eye to piracy in many
countries in the knowledge that it seeds the market, starts the
dependency cycle, and inhibits the growth of challengers. (ie, "your
first toke is free"). One can only hope that their financials are
forcing them to go after illegal use, and that (coupled with the
rampant success of Vista) can only help the spread of Linux and other
open source software.
