mail and web start in offline mode

Hey,

On Debian Testing with XFCE, network configured with Gnome's Network tool. When
I first set up this system I had some issues connecting to my new router, and
ever since then Claws Mail and Firefox both start up in offline mode by default.

I cannot find anywhere in the system that this preference is set.

Any ideas?
