As you've discovered, it depends on the player.  I used to have a DVD 
player that didn't like either CD-R or CD-RW, so I had to use an older 
CD player for the CD-R, but it still wouldn't work with CD-RW.  My 
current DVD player has no problem with either and the user manual also 
says it's compatible with them.
