I would expect some errors at the end. Look for lines that start with (EE).

I don't think so. One thing I just thought of, when was the last time you
restarted this PC? I'm on kubuntu 7.10, and I believe that there was an X
update pushed out over the weekend. Perhaps there is something in that update
that is affecting you.
