Well, that looks like realplayer is using the OSS interface.  As usual, I
think Len might have this one: if you upgraded the kernel, and the kernel is
using a newer version of the ALSA headers than the libraries that are
installed on your system, that would explain this behaviour.  By using the
OSS API realplayer and mpg123 will work just fine, but anything that uses
the ALSA libraries (I'm guessing mpg321 and audacity) will fail because of
the mismatch.  I'd suggest following Len's instructions to check the
versions, and then installing the correct ALSA libraries to match the new
kernel.
