rsync performance

I need to rsync 2 files (3GB and 4GB) from my home to another location over
DSL.
But I need it to be reliable. As I understand it, if portions of the file
are changed, but not the entire file, rsync should only update changed
portions?
What's the actual efficiency of this process?
