First time you open a terminal, it should recommend that you 'man 
sudo_root' (or similar). Regardless, just '$ sudo su', enter your user 
password, and you're at the root shell. From there, you can set the root 
password.

Remember, Ubuntu is aimed almost exclusively to new(er) Linux users. It 
expects (but doesn't limit you to) using the graphical tools for 
everything. :)

And yes, Ubuntu != Debian. It's based on it, but otherwise serve very 
different purposes.
