Don't run out to get the external drive just yet.
Here are some other options; most of them require the "Alternate
install" Ubuntu CD for use on the PC you use to create the install
system on the USB stick.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick
(the "official" method)
https://help.ubuntu.com/7.04/installation-guide/i386/boot-usb-files.html
(a slightly simpler method from the Ubuntu site)
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2007/09/28/usb-ubuntu-710-gutsy-gibbon-install/
(In fact, the whole 'pendrivelinux.com' site may be of interest to you)
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=316093
http://learn.clemsonlinux.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Install_from_USB_drive
(might be outdated -- meant for Ubuntu 5.04!)
http://efod.se/blog/archive/2006/11/29/installing-ubuntu-on-a-machine-with-no-cdrom-drive
(requires a USB floppy drive)
Hope this helps,
- Evan
