Ok, I played around. dcop shows kate. dcop can give me all kinds of
fun information about it. I can even probe into things like this:

$ dcop kate-3865 __KateMainWindow#1 isTopLevel
true

umm.. now what?  =)

I can use dcopserver_shutdown and I see things fall apart and the
various applications die.

I run dcopserver and after a while 'dcop' shows klauncher

I run kate again, and I see it show up in the 'dcop' listing.

But this instance of kate doesn't respect the hotkey settings.

Strange.

Plus-strange, because it's working on a sibling setup at home.

I think what I'll do is pause, and prep the set up anew (to unify and
sync my home and work setups) I think this issue will sort itself out
on its own..
