/dev/dsp missing

It turns out that the problem was a hardware one. I moved the card to 
another PCI slot and it worked,  /dev/dsp appeared and the mixer errors 
disappeared.

It's great to have live CDs to work from, it showed that the sound card 
didn't work in any configuration.
