I would have to assume the writer of the article didn't properly state what 
people were needing to do with the computer in the basement. Since they had 
physical access to the machine they wouldn't have needed to know any passwords 
to gain access to the machine unless there was a BIOS level password that 
prevented the machine from booting and even that could be worked around with 
physical access to the machine.

It also goes without saying that if you can guess at the password, it wasn't a 
good password.
