how to point a domain to a host?

You have to have a server that has a static IP address.  
Then you install bind (a.k.a named)  and configure it to serve names for
your domain.
Then you update your domain registration to use your DNS server.

Alternatively, most registrars will host a domain's DNS for you.

Generally speaking a hoster will do that for you and often prefers to.
