I have not had dealings with this particular company; to be sure, I'm
not _entirely_ certain I know the company.

It's the same habit as any salesman's: Find out what you can get
before you give them a price.

If I'm not mistaken, this is a variation of a similar argument in the
GNU Manifesto. IMO, the FSF argues on your (and my) side of the
fence. Treat (potential) employees with respect - doing so very
nearly ensures that the company will get that level respect back.
