Agreed, starting 'round 2003/2004.  :-)

As has been mentioned elsewhere in the thread, one important factor to
choosing a starting language would be to understand what kind of
coding you'd like to do.  Will it be for system administration?
Application/Utility developement?  Do you want it to be console based?
 XWindows?  Web?

Being able to answer these questions should help you get started.
Once you've spent some time with one language, it's been my experience
that writing in others isn't as hard is it might sound.  I spent the
first 10 years programming using BASIC and the next 10
learning/playing-wth a number of others.
