I have had enough wasted time caused by NOT using modules, so I now know
better than to compile a kernel with everything I need built in and
nothing else.  I have had very few problems with initrd's, especially
with initramfs on debian (as long as you never ever touch yaird, which
just sucks).

Being able to unload a module when you have a problem with it is worth a
lot of time, easily a lot more than solving any initrd problem ever
takes.
