Everything these days will autodetect and turn off and give you a good
message about it.

One note: There are some godawful LCDs coming out.  The new low-end
19" Dell screen I have for a spare computer at work will wash out a
lot of colours.  People will look at it and insist that everything
looks good -- photographs and text all look good.  But subtle colour
changes are NOT visible at all.

I can confirm this on other peoples screens too.. where they have
trouble distinguishing white from beige.
