I use a piece of microfibre (that happens to spend most of its time 
sitting between keyboard and screen in a closed laptop) and some breath. 
  I wouldn't worry too much about using a little elbow grease, but as 
you're aware, a little caution is wise.  All the splotches my monitors 
have suffered eventually gave way to this technique.  And yeah, Windex 
is right out.
