Nonsense.  That's just FUD.

I have never used Windows/Mac to load music on my iPod.  I have been
happy enough with GNUpod <http://www.gnu.org/software/gnupod/>

gtkpod <http://www.gtkpod.org/> is also reputedly usable.  I have had
less success with it, myself; it tends to crash on me :-(.

Oddly enough, this is completely standard behaviour for shells. This
is a roundabout way of saying `don't use combined chains of `&&'s and
`||'s unless you think Gödel's theorem is for sissies'.
