Usually the price of Windows itself is not the key concern but the need 
to buy security software, an office suite, graphics software, etc. I 
figure that if I had know enough about Linux 3 years ago, I would have 
saved about $1,000 in various software purchases over that time. The 
learning curve is steeper but you do save in the long run.
