Debian is a great place to find crufty old versions of things. At 
http://packages.debian.org/stable/oldlibs/libgd-dev you'll find a link to 
source code for version 1.8.4.

You can search the various releases from 
http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages

If you're after rpm rather then .deb or source try http://rpmfind.net/ as 
well.
