Here's some things that worked on a Sony VAIO laptop.
- hold the power switch down for > 10 sec., even though the
machine seems to be dead
- leave it plugged in, to allow the battery to charge (about
an hour) then try to power it on
- remove the battery completely from the unit, attach the
A/C adapter, then power on
