Don't forget "trade secret" protection.  One would think that once
others knew your secret, you'd have lost it, but that doesn't seem to
be the whole story.

And glueing this stuff together is licensing.  Many odd examples: like
the MS Kerberos changes that were disclosed in a document with a click
through license (apparently: I'd never click through it).
