Kernel updates in Ubuntu

I'd say disregard the 386 kernels altogether and use a 686 version. You 
can uninstall the 386 versions too, though you might have to edit your 
/boot/grub/menu.lst to take out the old entries if dpkg doesn't do it 
automatically.
