Nice email clients will insert a 'In-Reply-To: messageid' in the header,
so that other clients know which excact message it is a reply to. They
will usually also insert a 'References: messageids' header to show which
other messages it relates to back through the reply chain, so that even
if you are missing the message it is a reply to it can still be inserted
somewhere close to the right place by finding the nearest parent in the
thread.
