I see nothing about h.264 in the docs for transcode at a quick glange,
only h.263. Maybe it doesn't

Does ffmpeg support .vob as input even? I know transcode does.

Maybe apple hasn't released the codecs needed, given AAC is apples audio
codec.
I see this post mentions how to do it with VLC on Mac OS X, but again it
may have a codec that linux is missing:
