You are sort of where I was exactly 2 years ago!

I agree that Fedora Core or Ubuntu are about the easiest to get started with
(at least in my personal experience). The best thing to do is pick one and
then be sure to join their users mailing list.
Subscribing to the mailing list is invaluable for getting answers and
learning things that you are not aware of.

Also keep an eye on upcoming GTALUG meeting agendas. If it looks like
