I suggest that you have a look at http://www.basiclinux.net. This is an
excellent on line course aimed at people just starting out in Linux and
they try to make it as 'distro - agnostic' as possible. This means that
what they teach you will be applicable to what ever distribution you
choose to use. They cover everything from how to obtain a distro through
more advanced topics like security and internetworking (Samba).
