It was introduced in bash-3.0-alpha; I have never used it (or any
form of [[...]]).

I always compile and install the latest bash; too many distros
either have old versions and/or disable various features. The last
time I tried a Debian default bash, my mail scripts stopped
working: they had removed socket file descriptors. Mandrake
disables the time built-in.
