New ubuntu install freezes on boot on IBM T21 laptop

I am assuming you are using the latest version of Kubuntu 6.01 Dapper.

This is actually a known issue with that particular release.

Modify the xorg.conf file and add the following line to the "monitors" 
section:

Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,CRT"

that should do the trick :)
