That bit me a couple of times. Long story short... the *DEFAULT* in
the kernel is to only support 4 serial ports (COM1: through COM4: in
DOS-speak). To support more than 4, which is required for PCI modems,
USB modems, etc, you have to build in support in the kernel...
Do you understand "make menuconfig" (I hope)?
- Device Drivers --->
- Character devices --->
- Serial drivers --->
- (6) Maximum number of 8250/16550 serial ports
- (5) Number of 8250/16550 serial ports to register at runtime
Works for me with a PCI modem.
