strange hardware problem

Ooops I should have ready further into the past.

Any chance an Athlon kernel was installed by mistake?

From all the things that have been checked, I'm thinking that it's a
CPU/motherboard problem. If you want to beat this to death, you could
try to setup a crash-dump or for cases when it's hung try sys-rq.
