Have you taken a look at Captive NTFS?

http://www.jankratochvil.net/project/captive/

It basically uses NT's NTFS driver with a thin NT Kernel emulation  
layer.  Very complete implementation of NTFS and has worked well for  
me in the past.   Not too sure about performance though....

KNOPPIX uses this I believe...
