Surely it wouldn't be too difficult to encode to a higher bitrate when 
uploading to the device? You can't loose any quality that isn't there to 
be lost can you? Sure it might take a while depending on your computer 
and lame settings, but 56 to 96kbps wouldn't be too difficult a thing 
considering the apparent benefits of the unit otherwise.
