Yum has a tendency to hang on to all the old cruft. Whenever I have a
problem with yum the first thing I try is a full clean up:
yum clean all
And then:
yum check-update
I never do a 'yum update' when there are hundreds of packages in need of
upgrading. This can put you at the mercy of a painfully slow mirror. Yum
is fickle but it beats Up2date.
