It looks like Kooka uses gocr (bleah!) on some distros, GNU ocrad on 
others (untried by me; I suspect it could only better than gocr). 
There's some suggestion that the professional version of SuSE (whatever 
it's called) uses a commercial OCR application built on a respectable 
recognition engine.
