SUSE as SAMBA Client

I don't know much about SUSE (I'm also a Ubuntite) but
to isolate the problem you can run tcpdump or Ethereal
in SUSE when you're trying to connect with the Samba
client and see if you see any SMB packets going out.
Or you can run the packet sniffer in the server side
also to see if the SMB requests are coming in or not.
Look also at the Samba logs for errors:
