Unable to set resolution

I have this really great new monitor but it's stuck at 1024x768. It's
stuck for only one user and not for root.

As the user, I can get into the pclos control panel and everything is
set correctly. I've restarted the server but when I log in as that
particular user, the resolution is back to 1024x768. Again the pclos
control panel settings are correct, but nothing has happened in
reality.

Looking at the KDE control panel, it's stuck at 1024x768 and has no
settings to bring it higher.

xorg.conf looks like it ought to, with references to the new monitor
and nothing relating to the old one. However, the user is stuck at a
resolution not even referenced in xorg.conf. Moreover, ctrl-alt-+
does nothing. It's as though this user has its own X11 settings that
it's referring to.

Ideas?
