Dominic,

my advice is similar to others in the list. Assuming
your important data are documents (of the order of MBs
and not GBs) and your computer has USB port you can:

0) Don't touch the HD (your friend's advice was
actually bad; you first recover the data then you play
with the HD not the other way around)

1) Get a "LiveCD" (bootable CD) like Knoppix from a
magazine like suggested or you can get it from us (I
have spare ones, send me an email if you can't find
them)

2) Buy a Flash USB "thumb drive" (they are cheap and
handy anyways)

3) Boot the laptop with the Live CD (maybe you'll have
to get into the BIOS settings)

4) Insert the Flash drive, you'll see a new icon on
the desktop. copy (drag and drop) desired files to
thumbdrive.

Once you have your data you can at least work on it on
another computer (there's always Kinko's) while
somebody look at your hard drive or you get a new one,
reinstall SuSe etc.

If you cannot get soon the bootable CD you can risk it
and boot from HD and then insert the thumbdrive and
copy the files.

cheers,

Fernando
