A few months ago someone posted a link for free newsservers on the Ubuntu list:

http://www.usenetsupport.com/component/option,com_dbquery/Itemid,29/

I've used the "readnews" server many times... it works great and is fast.

Also, I have a free account at Teranews (http://www.teranews.com/) and
have used it for several years, finding it to be pretty reliable. They
also offer pay packages for heavier users.
