Filesystem and root device's drivers, and yes it would.  I like having a
flexible kernel though so I stick with modules for everything when
possible.  For the most part I have stuck to using debian supplied
kernels.  I haven't found a reason to compile my own 2.6 kernel so far.
Big change from 2.4 days and earlier.
