Mailman has been good enough to probably "sink" a lot of past
alternatives; it's an example of it being more worthwhile to
collaborate to improve one system than to try to support a bunch of
competing systems.

It's kind of similar to the way GCC is, in many ways, the "only" open
source C compiler (even though that's not true; development does
continue, albeit degraded, on lcc, tendra, and others...) to the point
that most people have no idea that there are any alternatives to GCC.
